| Torture during investigation is very inhuman. This torture has been carried out to unlimited extends. Hand-cuffing to palm trees; facing backwards, kneeling, and so on was a normal routine. Duration of these investigations varied from 45 days to six to seven months....sometimes the duration extends to a year. While handcuffed we were constantly thrown into the sea. This way we were dripping during the whole procedure.Sleep was impossible. |

Torture was carried out such that the main part of the body which suffered is the back bone. While cuffed kneeling down, an investigation officer would be using his ankle boots to to hit the lower backbone. The blows were cushioned by the palm trees. Bruises, sprains and even fractures were a common outcome from these inhumane acts. |

"Under excruciating conditions and fearing for my life as well as others in my cellblock, I tried very hard, to capture moments, horrifying moments."
"I tried to capture a time when evil had taken over all our lives. When the outside world was unaware of the crimes taking place in the prison of Maldives. The guards would come to our cells, beat us, torture us and then leave. And we would ask ourselves why? Why so much inhumanity? Are these people from the same land we have come from? " |
