Story behind the Art Works |

| MORE THAN ONCE SINCE JUNE 1990 |
It was not only during the year of 2000 that I was tortured in Dhoonidhoo Island , was also tortured in June 1989. During that time the police claimed that I had interpreted an illustration that was published in the “Hukuru” magazine, and confined me inside a small cell at the Police headquarters. They kept me there for 19 days. And, when I refused to sign a statement their choice, I was transferred to Dhoonidhoo and locked up in a small cell. I was kept there for 29 days. For 3years they dragged me to court, one day, Isthafaa Ibrahim maniku , in a telephone conversation informed me that the police had withdrawn their charges. .-NAUSHAD- |

| SINGLE LOCKED HAND CUFFS |
In addition to this around December, 1991, the police raided my house based on some unconfirmed reports by some body. While I was asleep the police arrived and began to hammer on the door. I was awakened and dragged outside, put me inside a jeep and dumped me into a launch. Then they took me to Dhoonidhoo Island . This time as soon as I was taken there, I was locked up inside a cell measuring 6 feet by 5 feet. The cell was made out of corrugated iron sheets. On the second night, I was removed from my cell. It was midnight. I was cuffed with a single lock handcuff and was put back into the cell. I was kept cuffed like this for 20 days. Showers were only allowed on Fridays. They put large granules of salt and sand into the food given to me. When confined inside the corrugated –sheet cell, around two pm in the afternoon, one would lose consciousness due to the extreme heat. After several hours I would wakeup. When you are cuffed like this you cannot seperate your palms from your elbows. They are stuck together. In this posture, it is not possible to wash yourself after your bowel movements. During this occasion I was cuffed by abdul Shakoor Abdulla. While he was doing this cuffing he told that there was nothing he could do about it. And he said he was just following orders. |

In this inhumane interrogation I was subject to, Thoha waheed, Mora Thaufeeg , Lady Ibrahim Maniku and a very foul mouthed Vaavu Lhahuthu participated. During the time of this interrogation a considerable number of inmates were tortured. There were cases when inmates were chained and put in stocks. In this manner Winter Shareef and Ahmed Rasheed were kept for months in stocks. |

| THERE IS NO WAY I CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS A CRIMINAL |
And it is my belief that in spite of the fact that even if I had claimed for assistance from amnesty International via the net, saying that five of us were planning to form a political party, I have not acted unlawfully. And even if I had claimed that Maumoon cannot be a better leader than Ibrahim Nasir, or, even if I had claimed that we will only know what kind of ruler Maumoon is when he concludes his term of rule, that I have acted outside the law. Furthermore, even if I had written in an e-mail that Maumoon is a cruel ruler, any person reading the e-mail, would easily understand that I had not broken the law or was disrespectable towards the constitution. As the discussions and constitution were carried out as an activity focused on the future formation of a political party, and furthermore as the formation of political parties is allowed in the Maldivian Constitution, everyone will agree that there is no way I can be classified as a lawbreaker or criminal. Therefore I believe that I am not a criminal and furthermore I believe that my continued detention is against all established Laws and regulation. |
